What’s the Difference?

The core difference comes down to how the ink gets onto the paper.

Litho (offset) printing uses metal plates, one for each colour (typically cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). The image is transferred from plate to a rubber blanket, then onto the paper. There’s a setup process involved: the plates need to be made, the press needs to be configured, and colour needs to be matched before the run begins.

Digital printing works more like a high-end version of an office printer. Your artwork is sent straight to the press as a digital file, with no plates required. The press uses toner or liquid ink to apply the image directly to the paper.

Neither method is “better” across the board. Each has clear strengths depending on what you need.

Most print buyers face this decision when commissioning brochures, leaflets, stationery, or packaging. The quantity you need, the timeline you are working to, and the type of finish required will all shape which method makes the most sense. Understanding the basics helps you have a more productive conversation with your printer and avoids paying over the odds for the wrong process.

When Litho Is the Better Choice

Litho printing comes into its own on longer runs. Once the plates are made, the cost per copy drops significantly, making it the more economical option for quantities of around 2,000 copies or more on flat work, and 1,000 or more on brochures.

Beyond cost, litho offers some clear quality advantages:

  • Colour accuracy: Litho handles large areas of solid colour more smoothly than digital, with no visible pixelation. If you need specific Pantone spot colours matched precisely, litho is the way to go.
  • Material range: Litho presses can handle paper weights from around 60gsm right up to 500gsm, giving you more flexibility on stock choices.
  • Special finishes: Metallic inks (gold, silver), UV varnishing, and embossing all pair naturally with litho printing.
  • Speed at volume: A litho press can produce up to 15,000 sheets per hour, making it highly efficient for large runs.

If you’re printing 5,000 brochures, 10,000 flyers, or a full packaging run, litho will almost always give you the best value and quality.

When Digital Makes More Sense

Digital printing shines when speed and flexibility matter most.

  • Short runs: Need 50 copies? 200? 500? Digital is far more cost-effective at lower quantities because there are no plates to produce and minimal setup.
  • Fast turnaround: With no plate-making stage, digital jobs can go from file to finished product much more quickly.
  • Variable data: This is digital’s superpower. Every single print can carry different text, images, or data. Personalised direct mail, individually numbered vouchers, or targeted marketing materials are all straightforward with digital.
  • Proofing and testing: Want to test two versions of a leaflet before committing to a full litho run? Digital lets you produce small test batches affordably.

Digital presses typically handle paper weights between 80gsm and 300gsm, so there are some limitations on stock. But for most standard marketing materials, business stationery, and short-run jobs, digital delivers excellent quality at a lower entry cost.

Quick Reference: Which Should You Choose?

Here’s a simple guide:

  • Quantity over 2,000? Litho is likely more cost-effective.
  • Quantity under 1,000? Digital will usually save you money.
  • Need Pantone colour matching? Go litho.
  • Need personalisation or variable data? Go digital.
  • Metallic inks or specialist finishes? Litho.
  • Tight deadline, small run? Digital.
  • Between 1,000 and 2,000? Talk to your printer. The crossover point depends on the specifics of the job.
