What is saddle stitching?

Saddle stitching is the simplest and most affordable binding method. Folded sections are gathered, dropped over a moving saddle at the spine, and secured with two wire staples through the fold. The result is a flat booklet that opens fully and lies flat on a desk.

It suits low page counts, usually 8 to 64 pages, and works best in multiples of four. Think event programmes, short brochures, newsletters and price lists. It is quick to produce and keeps costs down, the standard choice for short-run and high-volume booklets. The limit is thickness. Beyond around 64 pages the staples struggle and the booklet will not sit flat.

What is perfect binding?

Perfect binding glues the pages and cover together at the spine to create a flat, square edge, like a paperback book or a thick magazine. The folded sections are gathered, the spine edge is ground off, and adhesive bonds the pages to a wraparound cover. The flat spine gives you a printable edge, which is useful for catalogues and directories that sit on a shelf.

Standard perfect binding uses a hot melt EVA adhesive, short for ethylene vinyl acetate. It holds well and keeps costs sensible. It suits page counts from around 40 up to several hundred, the go-to for magazines, annual reports, catalogues and softback books where a clean spine matters.

What is PUR binding?

PUR binding looks like perfect binding but uses a different glue. Instead of EVA, it uses a polyurethane reactive (PUR) adhesive applied in a thin layer along the spine before the cover is folded over. PUR cures by reacting with moisture in the air, forming a bond far stronger and more flexible than EVA.

The payoff is durability. PUR pages resist pulling out, cope with heat and cold without cracking, and let the book open flatter. This makes PUR right for thicker publications, heavy-use books, and coated or laminated stock that standard glue struggles to grip. It costs more than standard perfect binding, but the finish and lifespan justify it.
